BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:
As a key member of the Dining Services team, you will support both back-of-house and front-of-house operations to ensure a clean, efficient, and sustainable kitchen environment. This role combines heavy-duty cleaning tasks with a direct commitment to the facility's waste-reduction and sustainability goals.
Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice to meet the evolving needs of Dining Services.


NO WORK STUDY REQUIRED - We hire student employees with or without work-study.

No Experience necessary - on-the-job training.

Position Responsibilities
(included but not limited to)
● Equipment Operation: Efficiently operate industrial dishwashers, powerwashers, compost trailer, and utilize three-compartment sink systems for manual scrubbing and soaking.
● Cleaning & Organization: Scrape, rinse, wash, sanitize, and organize all dishware, glassware, silver, pots, pans, and specialized cooking equipment. Consciously sort and remove compostable items from dishware, and place in proper areas/receptacles. Place landfill waste in proper receptacles.
● Chemical Safety: Safely handle and work with industrial cleaning materials and chemicals to maintain a sterile environment.
● Facility Upkeep: Perform opening, closing, and side work, including floor maintenance and front-of-house sanitation. Maintain high standards and promptly report custodial or maintenance issues to management.
● Team Collaboration: Provide tactical assistance to prep cooks and other kitchen staff as needed, especially during peak service hours.
● Facility & Equipment Upkeep: Report any custodial issues to the appropriate party

Supervision Received
Receives regular supervision from Operations Managers, full-time staff (Dish Utility, FS1, Production Cooks, Lead Cooks, and B&G), and Senior Administrators.

Qualifications
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
• Working indirectly and directly with the top allergens including Milk, Eggs, Peanuts, Tree nuts, Fish, Crustaceans, Wheat, Soy, and Sesame.
• Must be a registered student attending NMU (minimum credits 6 hours in Fall and Winter Semesters).
● Reliability: Demonstrate high dependability and a commitment to punctuality for all scheduled shifts. ● Composure: Maintain a calm, professional demeanor while working under pressure in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
● Safety First: Ability to work safely at all times, prioritizing personal safety and the well-being of coworkers and guests.
● Physical Stamina: Willingness to work in a hot, humid kitchen environment while standing or moving for 4 or more hours.
● Teamwork: Ability to function effectively as a supportive team member while remaining self-directed and productive when working independently.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
● Lifting: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
● Mobility: Constant standing and walking; frequent climbing, pushing, pulling, and reaching/working overhead.
● Dexterity: Ability to perform stooping, crouching, kneeling, and repetitive hand motions (including keyboard use).
● Communication & Senses: Adequate talking, reading, writing, hearing, and vision to perform duties safely and effectively.
